Lanquín

A journey to the creation of chocolate and the Q’eqchi cosmovision

Our Cacao Tour is an unforgettable experience where you will learn how to make delicious chocolate in the traditional Mayan way.

You will learn about the Sustainable Agricultural Practices used in our chocolate-making process, as well as the mysticism behind the rich Q'eqchi' Worldview and Culture.

And best of all, you can eat the chocolate you make!

What does the cacao tour include?

Guided tour by a local cacao producer

Your tour will be guided by the same people who process the cacao and make the chocolate, so you can ask any questions you want and get answers directly from the source.

explanation of regenerative practices

You'll be able to see our sustainable practices in action, and we'll explain why they're so important, not only for our community and our environment, but also for the quality of our cocoa.

opportunity to make your own chocolate

Because the experience wouldn't be complete without being able to make your own chocolate, we'll teach you how to hand-grind cacao and create your own unique recipe to take home.

  • “This is an incredible cacao farm, everything is made with care and respect to all - humans, Earth, beans, community. During the tour I discovered all the processes to purify the water, create fertilizers, to protect endemic plants and then every step from the fruit to the cacao making. I learned a lot about the technique and the history, but I also enjoyed to peel seeds with the happy women before grounding and making my own chocolates. This is an incredible experience during your stay in Lanquin.”

  • “We did the chocolate tour and chocolate making! It was absolutely amazing, they had so much knowledge about the local area and the local people and taught us about the history as well as the chocolate! We got to see how chocolate is grown and cultivated and made, as well as how they are able to give back to the local communities by buying ingredients from local villages and employing local women and girls to help with the chocolate making!

At the end we made our own chocolate and found out about our Mayan star signs! Would definitely recommend, thank you very much!”

  • “We stayed at Tuqtuquilal for two nights and it was such a lovely and unique jungle experience. We loved the cabins, the rainforest style shower and the entire layout of the property including the beautiful hikes and river access. The place was very pet friendly and they even allowed us to take our dog on the cacao tour which was a great experience. We loved the overall concept of Tuqtuquilal and we would love to return some day.
Thank you for a great stay.”

  • “An absolute must if you're in Lanquin. The guide is super cool. The tour is incredibly interesting, and their mission inspiring. We got to try some fruits shaken of the tree by ourselves. You also get to create your own chocolates from scratch.”

  • “Had a wonderful time on our cacao tour. The hosts and volunteers were super welcoming and friendly. Our guide had so much knowledge, explained the whole process very clearly, we well as outlined the cultural, historical influences over cacao and farming. Would 100% recommend doing the tour here as everything is authentic, supporting local families and traditional practice. We also got to take a lot of chocolate home!”

  • Wow! What an amazing experience. Tuqtuquilal was truly the real deal 🤘 It felt like authentic slice of the Lanquin community, with amazing local women and volunteers in charge ✊

I'd been to Guatemala before in 2018 🇬🇹 and I've done many other cacao tours in the past, but this was the first one that felt truly legit.

  • What a fantastic experience! We learnt so much, made our own chocolate and got to try so many different things. Without hesitation, I highly recommend this tour to anyone in the area.

  • It really was a fantastic experience. It is not “just” a cacao tour. The guide explains about the centre, how it supports more then 50 indigenous families, how they have build all the houses/ cabins and shelters in a sustainable way. You get a tour around the property and explanation how they turned deforested land into lush green rainforest again with permaculture, organic and other self-sufficient sustainable ways.

Please don’t skip this opportunity to experience this tour when you are visiting Lanquin!
